The Virgin Mary's Compassion

The Gentle Lady The Intercession Beatrice tells Virgil that a 'gentle Lady' (the Virgin Mary) in Heaven grieved for Dante's peril and asked Lucia to help. This sets the entire journey in motion. The Queen of Heaven Mary is the ultimate source of grace. In the Empyrean, St. Bernard prays to her for Dante's final vision, and she intercedes.

Saint Lucia's Aid

The Light-Bringer The First Intervention Lucia, the saint of light, responds to Mary's request and goes to Beatrice, urging her to help Dante. She is the 'foe of all that cruel is.' The Second Intervention In Purgatory, Lucia carries the sleeping Dante up the mountain to the gate, showing her continued protection.

Beatrice's Descent to Limbo

The Loving Request The Visit to Virgil Beatrice descends to Limbo to ask Virgil to guide Dante. Her eyes shine brighter than the stars, and her voice is angelic. She speaks of love that compels her. The Promise She promises to praise Virgil often before God. This act of love and humility moves Virgil to accept the mission.

Matilda's Role in the Earthly Paradise

The Gracious Lady The Guide Matilda appears gathering flowers and explains the nature of the Earthly Paradise. She leads Dante to Lethe and Eunoe, and later to Beatrice. The Symbolism Matilda represents the active life (Leah) or the state of innocence. She prepares Dante for his encounter with Beatrice.

Beatrice's Final Intercession

The Queen of Heaven The Prayer St. Bernard prays to the Virgin Mary, asking her to grant Dante the final vision. Beatrice and all the blessed join in this prayer. The Response Mary's eyes, beloved by God, show her favor. She then turns to the Eternal Light, and Dante's vision is granted.
